Q Evaluate The goal of your Project Work assignments in the back half of this course is for you to integrate everything you've learned about your social justice issue as well as persuasion and storytelling and practice effective and professional communication. Your individual Capstone Project Work assignment this week is twofold: 1. Create and deliver a two-minute or less elevator pitch (persuasive oral argument) regarding your social justice issue as a video. 2. Complete a written analysis of the structure and persuasive elements of your elevator speech (akin to the analysis you did for this week's discussion) Pre-step: Review our presentation on crafting persuasive arguments • For further optional review, check out the Excelsior OWL on Argument and Critical thinking (Links to an external site.). Step 1: Review the elevator pitch scenario Imagine that you have a chance elevator encounter with your local state (or other locality relevant to your specific issue) representative. Assume this person does NOT have a background in psychology. You have two minutes to not only convince her that your social justice issue is a priority concern but also explain how psychological theory can help diagnose and remedy the issue. Good luck! Step 2: Design and record your elevator pitch Note that this video must be of YOU and should not feature cutaways to any other visuals or footage. This is you caught on film delivering your elevator pitch. For maximum points, your video should be two minutes or less and include the following components: • Identification of your social justice issue and why it's important (to you and the world)? o This is the same social justice issue that you completed your Literature Review for. • How psychological theory relates to your social justice issue and has the potential to help address the problem. o Do not discuss specific research or the details of your solutions. Save this for your multimedia presentation in M6/M7. Be sure you're establishing ethos, logos, and pathos, and don't forget to incorporate storytelling! And while developing a script is encouraged, your elevator pitch should not be read and should be delivered both conversationally and persuasively. In a real elevator, you won't have a script! I have found that an effective elevator pitch is nine things: concise, clear, compelling, credible, conceptual, concrete, customized, consistent, and conversational. — Chris O'Leary Step 3: Complete a written analysis of your elevator pitch This is an APA-style analysis of the structure and persuasive techniques leveraged in your elevator pitch, akin to the analysis provided in our M5 discussion. • Discuss how you've established ethos, logos, and pathos and the role of storytelling in your elevator pitch. • Outline the structure of your argument (e.g., Problem, Solution, Benefits) and you how supported each component. To be 100% clear, this written analysis is not the script for your elevator pitch! Step 4: Submit your elevator pitch and your persuasive analysis As a video file or link and a word processing document. This assignment is due by 11:59 pm ET on Sunday. By keeping in mind the rules of persuasive arguments and their modes, I have tried to put ethos, logos, and pathos in my elevator pitch. The topic that I have chosen to investigate in this class is "the impact of systematic racism on the psychological wellbeing of African-American women." In my video narration, I have tried to convey emotions and feelings by telling the audience that "racism is a serious social justice issue that needs solving because it has destroyed many potential individuals who could do wonders and make this world better. It has deepened roots in our society and is not giving the margin to minorities to show their optimal functioning." It will ignite their thoughts and help people identify the effects of racism they have faced or observed (Omadxon, 2022).
